Star Treck

O.K... Look, just because I went to see Star Trek in theaters, does not make me a nerd. It actually has a good plot, with great dialogue, and the special effects looked real. That is actually amazing for Star Trek, which usually has horrendous plot, cheesy dialogue, and the special effects usually look like they've been drawn with crayon. The comedic aspect was great, with jokes that actually made me laugh. I have a bit to complain about though, in the scene on the frozen planet. The snow look like white confetti, the ice wouldn't have frozen in the pattern that it did, which suggested a small, frozen waterfall, and he would have gotten horrible frostbite by the time he got to the shelter. Trust me. I know these things. I'm Canadian. I'm going to have to give it 2 thumbs up, a 4/5, or an 8/10. Overall, definitely worth watching. And personally, I'd say worth a second visit to the theaters. A buyer for sure!

  1. "Treck" .... hmmmm... interesting spelling there.

I am still devastated that you went to see it without me. There's a rumour afoote that you might let me come to the IMAX version with you, but sometimes our schedules don't add up well.

  2. Why would I refuse? I would a) get to see it in IMAX, and b) get to go with Julia!

  3. It was a great film -- and the company was also much appreciated. As someone old enough to be a fan of and have seen the OS (original series) and to have even been resistant initially to TNG, I thought that this film understood star trek better than anyone else has since Roddenberry first proposed the idea: it is myth of operatic proportions. Star Trek is based on Ulyssess and structure in characters and tone to imitate gun smoke. It is still the repository and source of our hopes for a future free of racism, famine, war and disease.

The arrival of Obama and the arrival of Star Trek within months of each other is no coincidence. Perhaps whatever the sixties failed to do in changing our world for the better the next decade and finally get right. And Star Trek will have been there again, a vivid dream of a not-to-distant future.
